Not a very good software

Pros:

Prints checks

 


Cons:

Can't  fix mistakes in the transfer funds transactions.

If you want to do payroll you need to buy the tax tables. 

Can't handle credit card fees from cc transactions

Can't handle bank fees. 

Customer support is lacking.

Don't Waste Your Time!!!!

Pros:

None.  I was never even able to get it run.


Cons:

During installation it complained about other programs running.  OK....  It still complained and wanted me to open msconfig to stop all programs from starting.  I make my living on computers.  NEVER in 11+ years of service have I had to do this to install a single piece of software.  AND THIS IS ONLY ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE!!!!!

I made a educated guess and assumed it was having issues with my virus software or my firewall because I've run in to that issue before.  I turned off that and it installed.  It finished installing and restarted my computer.  The first time I opened Bookkeeper my computer rebooted.  I tried a 2nd time, it rebooted....  I tried running in my security software's safe zone it rebooted again.

By the way every time (2 people) I've asked someone what files it'll import they have said it would import qif.  I got to their 2nd tier support to deal with the booting issue and that guy said it doesn't support qif.  !@#$!@#$!!!!!

I have now just wasted 2 hours of my time dealing with installation to find out this wasn't going to work anyway.

Pros:

I can't tell you the pros, the trial wouldn't work, so I bought the boxed version at Staples.  That was 2 years old, and didn't install correctly, but support sent me a link that was supposed to work.  Install finally worked, then the program told me it had to update.  It could NOT update, and would close the program.


Cons:

They say it will import from your bank, all my banks use .qif format--which Bookkeeper will not import.  It says it will import .ofx files, which I can get from the "download statement" portion of my bank, but none of the dates imported.  I don't think the bank wants to rewrite the software just to work with Bookkeeper.

I spent days trying to get this to work, and just as much time trying to get to a support person who could actually help.

Focused bookkeeping without the fluff of QuickBooks

Pros:

Everything needed to start business, manage customers, jobs, vendors, non inventory items and has inventory module if you want. In version 2010, they made the "Chart of Accounts" accessable as a list for easy editing at setup time. I found budget module useful, you can setup budgets for expense accounts and run reports comparing budget to actual amount spent. Also you're not always being pitched some additional service as with QuickBooks. Payroll module works well when you purchase Tax Tables for $30.00 and download them. All in all, except for con mentioned below, ten times the value of QuickBooks. Should be more available in retail stores.


Cons:

You have a choice of 4 invoice layouts but they are not editable. Very frustrating because editable invoices appears as an upgrade under the "File" drop down menu but just goes to their web site. I even had a tech support person tell me they were editable if I upgraded to 2011. It wouldn't be so bad except the fields connected with comments, like to say, thank you for your business, do not show up on end product, so I have to add a line to the invoice for comments. It's a work around, but a pain and it hurts the impression customer gets when they see document.


Bottom Line:

I used QuickBooks in two other jobs and was annoyed because they were always trying to sell you something. They didn't have any problem letting us have three identical merchant accounts at $30 each a month! I corrected that when I discovered it, but it showed me they were really after my money and I had to be on the watch. Bookkeeper is not like that at all, they offer you tax tables to do payroll with and the opportunity to sign up for a very reasonably priced merchant account through Authorize.net. Other than the uneditable invoices, I find Bookkeeper a wonderfully easy and full featured program to use. I highly recommend it!
