Upgrade to PowerDesk Pro 8.5 ??? RIP-OFF!!!!

I have been a paid-up registered owner of PowerDesk since version 5, I think. I saw talk of version 8.5 and asked about the cost to upgrade from 8.0. I was told that if they didn't send me an e-mail then I would have to pay full retail. Not only are they charging money for what is, at best, a software patch for the previous, broken version but they won't even give me a discount because they didn't send me an email.  They have breached their licensing agreement by failing to provide me with an upgrade path.

Someone posted this link where it is $9.00 for the upgrade.

I don't know it it will work for you but give it a try.

I agree with you, why should there be an upgrade price 8.5 if you already own buggy, slow unreliable version 8.

Cannot agree more. May sound like a hereric but I very reluctantly paid Avanquest the $14 for the upgrade. So far very few bugs and it works reasonably well. Off the top of my head there are many alternative adverbs and adjectives that describe Avanquest's rip off of Powerdesk users. I don't throw the ethics word around easily but here, Avanquest just had to do the ethical thing and take the hit. Not it's customers.

A reminder: Here's a company that took the best Windows file manager ever and then messed it up badly for longer than a year. So much so that I had to purchase Dir Opus and had been using that since Feb 2011. I'm giving PD8.5 a final try - not to support Avanquest - but because this software used to be be that good.

If Avanquest's dev team for this product did not have the skills to rewrite/modify the code for Win7 compatibility/stability, the right thing would have been to delay release of the product until it was ready and play open cards with their customer base. A little honesty goes a long way. Even in this dog-eat-dog world we live in. It's simply bad business that the customer has to finance re-development of PD by paying for virtually unusable beta versions advertised and sold as stable product.

I'm still using Ver7 on an XP machine and have no trouble with it at all.

Let Avanquest look at companies that treat their customers with respect. The least they can do is make Beta 8.5 available free to registered users of PD. Avanquest is not a minor player and cross budgeting for PD's redevelopment would have retained many customers and goodwill. Where did you guys go to business school?

Nuff Said.

I took the plunge and got the upgrade to 8.5 with a new serial number. It should have been free for those who already have 8.

It still opens slow just like 8.4 did. I have not seen any difference between the 2 versions except maybe when viewing JPEG files, they seem to be faster. I also noticed a slider bar where you can increase the size of the picture. I can't preview PDF file. I do have that option selected in options/preference settings. It worked in 8.4.

I have been using the 60 day trial of Opus and it works very fast compared to PD8.5. I just wish it did not cost so much. I also like xplorer2. Both of those programs are 64 bit, which PD8.5 is not. Maybe that is why they work so much faster. If I don't see any other improvements in PD8.5 within 30 days, I will ask for my $9.00 refund.

Even the free file managers like Free Commander work better. There is also a 64bit version called Free Commander XE.

I think the best thing that could happen to PowerDesk is that it get sold to some software developer who can fix the problems and make it a great product that it once was. Right now it is mediocre at best.

Hello John,

I am checking to see if there are any discounts being offered to existing customers. Once I get this information I will post it. I do apologize for the delay in getting you an answer.

Agree with John and you other guys, I stopped using v8 on Win7 (from v6 on XP) as it kept crashing. I just start over on a fresh win7 was stunned that they want to charge for a minor version upgrade of what has become buggy software, had a fairly lengthy program upgrade to 8.4 (at least 3 restarts, never seen that before) this morning.

Anyway just went to use the FTP and it seems to be using my computer login (client) instead of the one it is supposed to, posted as a new question.

Agree with Jack, used to be a little known wonder, but now is very buggy, I will be looking for a replacement if they don't get it together on this version, they will want more money for win8, wouldn't pay again...

I have been using PD8.5 for a few days and I can't say I am impressed. It has a few minor new features but not really worth having. It is sill very slow to open the program and is still slow at opening file folders. I can't preview PDF files. I get a message that says Preview Not Available. I can only view the Properties or File Data, but no image. I do have the option checked in the OPTIONS, FILE VIEWER settings. I even reinstalled Acrobat Reader 10 and that did not work. I could view them in PD8.4 with no problems. I can view text and JPEG file OK along with playing mp3 files.

I think Avanquest has dropped the ball on this update. It is not worth the $9.00 the are charging for it. I not sure it is even worth having even if was free. And it still is only a 32 bit program.

PowerDesk used to be my favorite file manager, but no longer. It started to really go down hill at version 7.

I am trying trial versions of xplorer2 on Opus Directory 10. These two programs open ten times faster then PowerDesk and the file directories open much faster also. Opus is my favorite but is is not worth the almost $90.00 they want for it. But you do get a license for installation on two computers. xplorer2 cost under $30.00. One more thing. They both have true 64 bit versions of their programs.

Free Commander XE if in beta testing and is 64 bit. It is free as is the 32 bit version of Free Commander. Multi Commander also has a 64 bit version and it if free. Also try Q-Dir 64 bit version. It is free and faster then PD8.

With Win XP PD has been my favourite file manager since free V4 and I put Free V6 on any PC I help with. I bought V6 Pro, then V7 Pro which was worse and now V8.5 Pro which is terrible. It can be extremely slow, says not responding then wakes up, sometimes items don't display until clicked on, sometimes can't delete files because PD is 'using' them. Going to put back V6 Pro which should co-exist. Very disappointed. What an incompetent team to foul up what was a great product.

I am using PD 8.2.1.9 in W7 32 bit. I only use the single pane and find this version very satisfactory, particularly good for dragging and dropping hundreds of photo files/folder. Only nuisance is not being able to add a Note to a Folder item. eg I have 88 top-level folders in Program Files and I really need to know at a glance what they all do; cu3ox ?, ffdshow ?

Enter XYplorer where I can add a Comment to file and folder items. But unfortunately there is no ZIP support, a good feature of PD.

It is a real nuisance to have to use two file managers!!!!
