Perfect Image 64 bit does not recognize USB drives

I have just installed Perfect Image 12, 64 bit on my PC running Windows 7 Professional.  It will not access any USB drive.  I have a variety of WD and Seagate USB drives.  All give an error message saying the drive may have problems.  They don't.  Any suggestions?

Terry,

Thank you for writing in.  I'm sorry for the trouble you are having.

It sounds like something is interfering with the Perfect Image.  Are you trying to see the drives while the program is installed, or are you booting to the disk?

Thanks for the quick reply.  It's just a problem with Perfect Image.  The drives work fine for all other applications.

I've narrowed it down to USB 3.0 drives.  Perfect Image recognizes all my older 2.0 and flash drives.

Only with USB 3.0 drives does it tell me the drive is corrupted.

Terry,

That is interesting.  PI12 and USB 3.0 came out around the same time, so it should work well with it.  Does it give you the same error when you are booting to the Perfect Image disk?

Mike,

When I boot from the PI Backup Flash drive I created, the 3.0 hard drive is there.  It's only when I run the software that I get the "I/O error" message and the program terminates.

It MAY be because I'm running a 3.0 drive on a 2.0 controller, although they are supposed to be backwards compatible.  Sometime next week, I'll be installing a 3.0 card and mounting the 3.0 drives on it.  I'll post if that resolves the problem.

Terry,

Thank you, please do.  I want to make note of that if it does.

Mike,

Installed the USB 3.0 controller.  Software still gives an I/O error message and refuses to recognize the drive.  Don't know if it's a problem with this specific WD HD, WDBACW0030HBK-NESN or the 3 TB size.  Since it recognizes my older WD Essential 2 TB drives, I'll just use one of those.

Ok Terry.

I have done research.  It does appear that if the external drive comes with pre-installed software, it can cause Perfect Image issues with seeing or using it.  Reformatting the drive can usually solve that issue.

Just something to try.

Art,

I/O errors are very generic, they mean there is a communication error.  Generally, it ends up being a corruption on the disk or in the data.  Doing a surface scan can often find those errors.

If that doesn't resolve it, the error is very hard to pinpoint.
