h.264 free, is it good ?

I just read that h.264 (codec video used in HTML5) is free.

What is hidden behind that ?

First, it's free for steaming (playing). Creation of a new video still needs royalties.

Second, it's free, until december 2015. Then after ? If this codec is the most used, in 3 or 4 years, and they decide to set a price for streaming, it will be evil...

Wait and see as they said...

I hate to contradict you Patrick, but they announced that streaming will be free forever. Cost of recording is nothing compared to streaming, right?

actually you misread a slight detail, the article i saw ( CNet Article) said that back in February that had set the 2015 timeframe, and have recently decided to lift that timeframe and assure the codec remains free forever.( or until they change their mind again )

as for the creation charging royalties, well that's a different story.

arfffff, you're right, and by the way, I hate when you contradict me too :)

My bad, streaming will be free forever, royalties only are until (a least) 2015

And what about the codecs licences? What if you want to make a browser or any program that work with HTML5?, And what about open source projects, Firefox wont use probably.
