I've been a long time user, although not frequent, user of a video conferencing service called DimDim. Yesterday I received by email a notice saying that DimDim has been acquired by SalesForce.com, and will shutting down it's free service as of March 15th, 2011.
For those of you unfamiliar with DimDim, it was a tool that you could use to host online meetings with multiple participants, with voice, screen sharing, and web cam support. If you were like me, and had been a member for a long time, you were allowed to have up to 20 participants in any given meeting.
Sure there were a few limitations to the free account, your meetings couldn't last more than 60 minutes, you weren't allowed to record, and a few other items, but to me, they weren't really limitations so much as features i didn't need.
Sure there are many entreprise competitors in this industry, and i have tried a couple ( listed below ). All are extremely good, and work well for an entreprise.
Adobe has Adobe Connect

Citrix offers GoToMeeting GoToMeeting

Cisco offers WebEx

But these solutions, are not necessarily what an occasional user needs or wants. In my case, i just want something that i use for occasional content sharing with one or more people. This is the reason i really liked DimDim, it was a good product, and was free. Sure it wasn't necessarily as full of features as some of those paying services, but i didn't need those features.
my question is do you know of any other services that could fill this gap in my toolbox, now that DimDim is closing its doors.

Sorry to say, I don't know any service to suggest. Do you know why this service is closing? Perhaps they are going to a paid service, but of course, if they were, there should be an announcement about that, eh?
Sorry I could not be of any help with this, but will keep an eye out for you. :)

Wow, long and involved. I did read the whole thing tho'...
Here is a tiny quote: "You are cautioned to not place undue reliance on forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date of this press release. Neither salesforce.com nor Dimdim is under any duty to update any of the information in this press release."
OK, so no one actually knows what will happen with the DimDim platform. It could come back as an add-on to current services provided by SalesForce or any of it's entities (which seem numerous). Hmm...
Sorry, this does not address your question of finding another free browser based communications module, like DimDim. "Free" (and some really GREAT) services seem to get "gobbled up" by bigger companies, and reworked to fit into their service packages. But, almost never come back as "free" again. What a shame...

If you read through some of the other articles on the site, they mention they acquired DimDim to integrate it with their Chatter solution. So i don't for the moment forsee then opening it up again

I recently switched from GoToMeetings to http://mort13.gvoconference.com/ and love it. It is cheap and you can customize your page with photos, links, banners. While giving a webinar you can surf the web, watch a youtube video, use the whiteboard, share documents and video stream.
It is worth checking out.
