Learn by Doing vs Do by Learning

Which is better and more effective?

Learn by doing or do by learning?

Who knows more in life and business;

the one who studied half of his life

or

the one who has practical experience in life and business?

I'm a "learn by doing" person for sure. Great topic Ritchie.

Thanks Marc-Antoine. I am also a "learn by doing" person. I guess, for this; one needs quick learning mind and practical skills.

'Learning by doing' and more importantly, learning by your mistakes!

Learn by doing definately. I have and know people that have professional licenses like Real Estate, Law, Doctorate, and they all say the same thing, what I studied and tested on is not useful in the field. It's like night and day.

Depends what kind of person you are as some people might find 'Learning by doing' better and more effective but others may find 'doing by learning' to be better for them. I'm a 'learning by doing' person; it works much better for me.

I'm definitely a "learn by doing" person. I spent 5 years at college and uni, but learnt much more in my first year doing freelance development work. At uni, college etc you're mainly learning what you need to pass tests and assessments, rather than the deeper understanding you get from doing something professionally.

Definitely a 'learn by doing' girl.  I agree with Simon.  Most of what you learn in classes is either forgotten or never used.

Eileen Brown says:

Learn by doing; experience is the best teacher.  Just like the "hard knocks" school of life for everyone, we learn from our mistakes and our successes alike.

Formal schooling is good for processes, like learning accounting, programming languages and like that.  Don't knock schooling but know that truth in learning comes from life.
