Food Network Recipe Manager - Problem with URL when trying to import recipe

I cannot import recipes from Food.com into the Food Network Recipe Manager as demostrated in the video at the following link: http://usa.novadevelopment.com/support/in_app_resource/foodNetwork/video_tutorial.aspx

I have followed the steps as demonstrated in the video but I receive an error message and the recipe does not download.  Here is the error message that I receive: "There was a problem with the URL - it's either incorrect, or for an unsupported site." Can anyone give me a solution?

M,

This error occurs when something is improperly formatted with the recipe from the website.  If you can provide us the URL for the recipe, we will be happy to forward it over to the appropriate people for the Food.com site.

Unfortunately, we have no control over the site.  So, we cannot provide any sort of ETA on if/when they may have it corrected.  What I would recommend is to manually enter the recipe.  You may be waiting an indefinite period of time for a correction to the recipe on the site.

Robby E. says:

Nicky,

It appears that something on the site changed, as recipes that I imported previously no longer import. However, in the intervening time, the developers have worked on an update to work with the site.  So, you should now be able to import those recipes after installing the update.  You can get the update by going to File - Check for Updates.

Robby, I'm using version 1.0.5.0, and it doesn't want to import recipes for me. Here's one of a few that I tried:

Will you see if it works for you? Thanks!

Pam,

I was able to duplicate your issue. It appears that something may have changed with the site's formatting. I have reported this issue to the developers. They are investigating the issue to see what can be done to resolve this issue.

I had the same problem and when I updated the software it fixed the problem. Now the problem is back. Also the link to help from Nova that takes you to Softcity does not work either. This will be the last software I buy from either company. VERY POOR Support.

Unfortunately websites change their styles on a regular basis. I use a program called RecipeFox to collect recipes from websites to import into MasterCook, and it constantly has the same issue...it's broke each and every time a website changes their code and design. It's not that big of a deal. The program just needs to be adjusted to deal with the new code the website is using. This program isn't made/developed by the same people who change/update food.com, just as RecipeFox has no control over the websites it collects recipes from either.

The support on this forum is very good. If you ask a question a knowledgeable company representative will get right back to you. They've been really good at that in the many years I've dealt with them as a fellow product user of several of their software titles.

Also, it's important to keep in mind this is the very first version of this product. Therefore, there is going to be a lot of changes ahead, just as we experience with the initial versions of other software titles and how they evolve over the years. This is why it's important for users to notify the company of problems. The staff support many titles. They don't use the programs every day like the average user, so they aren't likely to spot problems as soon as we are able to. They are very good about trying to duplicate a problem to verify it and pass on to the developers to address.

I'd suggest you just give them a chance.

Pam, I am not just some angry person that is venting on this subject.  I have been fighting this software for a year now. This is not the first time it has had this problem. They issued a patch to fix it once at least. When I first installed the software it was hit or miss if it worked. I went thru the support and reported the problem and am still waiting for a response from over 9 months ago. When you click on the support links thru Nova they do not work anymore. I feel that if you are going to have software that uses recipes from one website and only one website, maybe you should have a better relationship with that websites code writers and work with them before it is a problem for the consumer.  Many people buy this software thinking it is linked with Foodnetwork.com, when in fact it is not. It seem they just bought the rights to some of the recipes and logos.

All of the recipes included in the program come from Food Network Kitchens as stated on the front of the product's box. Its their content exclusively. The front of the box states you import recipes from Food.com. That was one of the first things I noticed before I opened the box: "One click import of over 400,000 Food.com recipes." I know that food.com is not the same thing as foodnetwork.com, so I knew the included content was from one source, and you can import further recipes from another source. Nothing was confusing to me about what I was getting.

When I open Food Network Recipe Manager and select Food Network Recipe Manager Website it takes me to this website:

http://www.novadevelopment.com/software/food_network_recipe_manager-142000

That doesn't happen for you?

Are you talking about the SoftCity Cafe link not working from the Support web pages? It doesn't work for me either. Perhaps if we tell the company they can have someone fix it.

Robby, when you go here:

http://www.novadevelopment.com/support/customer_service/index.html

it takes you here:

http://www.novadevelopment.com/template/nova/softCityPop.html

however, the links to SoftCity are not working correctly from there. Will you please pass that along to the appropriate person to fix?

Pam,

One of the site developers was doing some work last Thursday that broke a number of links. After Tom reported that problem, I reported it to the web developers. It appears that they corrected the issue Friday morning. I was out Friday, so I cannot say for certain it was working then. I do know it was working this morning when I checked the site.

If it didn't install then how were you able to start it up? Do you mean the installation process would crash?

Or, are you saying it installs but crashes when you try to run the installed program?

I didn't have any problems installing it. It runs fine for me too. It has never crashed on me. I'm using Vista. Usually when a program crashes on startup that indicates some other program on your computer is conflicting and causing the issue. Typically I've found it to be caused by spyware or the antivirus program interfering. Did you try restarting the computer in Safe Mode to see if the program would start fine that way? Look up "Safe Mode" in the Windows Help. The article tells you why it's a good troubleshooting step when any program crashes on your computer.

Pam- I had to wait for an update to come out and download the update and install the update before starting up the program. This took a couple of months to fix. No the program starts ok most of the time. There might be another software conflict. I believe it is a Microsoft office program. My computers are Apples computers and don't run any anti-virus software. No viruses in over 10 years.  I would like to hear from the support people instead of you from now on.

Robby, I tried importing from Food.com again today--just to try a recipe that previously worked fine. It erred out, which wasn't too surprising since I know it's currently broken, and you said there's currently no ETA.

However, I noticed that when I do that the Import command is no longer available from the File after it errors out. It's dim and won't allow me to select it. I have to restart the program to make the command selectable once again.

Do you experience the same? Is this something that's supposed to happen by design?

Thanks!

Robby E. says:

Tom,

Regarding your crashing issue, I am a bit confused. I understand it was crashing when running it after you originally installed it. It seems from one of your following posts that this has been resolved since via an update. Is that correct? Or is it only working on one of your computers at this point?

Regarding the importing issue, I managed to reach one of the developers today and get an update on the issue. Apparently, there are additional changes planned for the Food.com site that would affect the program. So, they are waiting until the changes are finalized before they can work on an update to allow the program to import the recipes again.

Regarding speaking to a support person, if that is what you want to do, I would recommend that you submit a ticket to Nova Development's Technical Support department. None of their support representatives monitor or respond to posts on this site. They only interact with customers via their email ticketing system for the Food Network Recipe Manager program.

Pam,

I am not sure why that is occurring on your computer. When I try to import a recipe, I get the error message. However, when I go back to the File menu, the Import option is still available to me. Which version of Windows are you running it on? Perhaps there is a difference in the OS that is causing you to get different results.

Hopefully, they will contact the Technical Support department once more.

Robby E. says:

Herb,

The .fmrecipe file extension only applies to exported recipes from the Food Network Recipe Manager software. It is unrelated to the issue with the Food.com site. The issue with Food.com is that they have changed their site's formatting which prevents the program from importing the recipes from the site. As of this time, we are still waiting for the final changes to be made to the site before the developers can update the program to read the new way they formatted the recipe information on the site.

Nancy,

This issue has already been escalated to the program developers. They are aware of this issue. Due to the fact that they do not control the Food.com website, they are limited in what they can do. At this point, they are waiting for the final formatting changes to be made to the site before they release an update that will allow the program to import recipes again. They are being told that the final changes to the site should take place sometime this week. Barring any further delays with the site and assuming that everything goes smoothly with developing/testing the new update, the developers hope to have the update out as early as next week.

Hello,

This is to let everyone know that the developers released an update last night for Food Network Recipe Manager. To get the update, you can go to File - Check For Updates. The version number after the update has been installed is 1.0.6.0. Once installed, the program will able to import recipes from Food.com once more.

Please note that some of the URLs for recipes have changed. So, if you have a URL that you saved and is failing to import, you may need to look up the recipe to get the new URL.

I bought Food Network Recipe Manager on Tuesday, March 26, 2012. I have downloaded and installed the update and importing from food.com isn't working. I get the same message that everyone else gets. Like everyone else who bought it, I want it to work. After all, this program isn't one of those cheap $10 programs.

UPDATE! It seems that the updates I got were older updates. I finally got the newer update and now the importing is working. YAY! I do have to say that having to update 3 times before I got the correct one was frustrating.
