What is the interest of the "on-line" aspect in a drawing tool?

Following an article from Xavier about Sumo paint, I realized that I could not find any benefit of using an on-line drawing tool, unlike the classical software installed on your PC that you can use with your own favourite hardware (graphical tablet..etc).

I assume that designers usually works on very big files that does not fit with an on-line editor (or may be with a hell of a bandwidth), so I cannot consider using these on-line drawing tool.

May be I did not considered some other aspects of the on-line drawing possibility, so please do not hesitate to give me your point of view.

Online drawing tools are perfect for netbooks, for example, and I think they will have a lot of presence in the tablets market.

Online applications allows you to share directly your creations!

In addition, the application is always up-to-date and you'll avoid the risk of not being able to start your windows after a bad installation.

Everyone has access to the same application and the same version so there is no problem of compatibilities.

Graphic softwares takes lots of resource! an online application, use the powerful of the Server.

@Miguel: I'm okay with the tablet argument, but not sure about netbooks, they are mainly very small screens.

@Benjamin: Creation sharing always existed , so I don't think online drawing will add any interest on this side.

But I keep the resource argument as a very important improvement.

For me the main interest is that you don't need to get an application installed, some time I use them to draw things that Paint is not able to support (no multi-layer support, no vectorial drawing for text etc...), so instead of looking for a CD I probably lost I'm more likely to go online and draw it directly.

Note that some image editor have great features and filters such as Picnik (that has been acquired by Google recently)

Last but not least: The entire software industry is moving online (SAaS) and you'd better be prepared to use online tools too ;)

I do not consider the move on-line as an argument. Even thought it already started , it doe snot seems to be very popular considering the amount of website proposing online desktops, you can see by there leak of popularity that it is not working good so far.

Personally I will use a drawing tool when it will offer me as much advantages as a classic installed tool.

My purpose is about the online drawing tools, not the SAaS concept that I strongly support.

I can just advise you to look at what SAaS model mean: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_as_a_service

It's "the move on-line" you don't consider as an argument ;)

Adn moreover I did not talk about "virtual desktop" as I personally find no interest since real WebOS are coming...

Thank you Mohamed ! I just discovered that encyclopaedia can be online too, what a super site Wikipedia ;-)

The question is not about SAaS, it is about a drawing tool specifically.

You might want to raise this as a discussion if you want, but it is not the topic here.

I've occasionally used http://www.splashup.com/ which is an online application. BUT really, it's just a flash based program that is accessible via the web. Is that really an on-line tool or just an application you don't have to install?

Saying that, Sumo Paint is very very impressive!
