Program crashes when trying to convert a project to a PDF.

I am looking for solution to Print Artist Gold 23.00.40 issue with program bombing when I request to export/create a PDF file. I found the solution for 23.0.0.38. Is there a simular solution for 23.0.0.40?

Tom,

There are no known issues with Print Artist 23.0.0.40 crashing when exporting to a PDF.  That particular version is the one that corrects the issue with 23.0.0.38.

I spoke with someone last week that was having a similar problem with Print Artist v24.  It turns out that the issue seems to be related to either having too little system resources or a conflicting program that was running in the background.  What I would suggest you try to do first is restart your computer.  After it restarts, launch Print Artist without starting any other programs.  Then, open your project and attempt the conversion again.

If it still fails at that point, we can attempt to disable your startup items to ensure that there is nothing conflicting with the program.  To do that, I will need to know which version of Windows you are running this on.

I have the same problem with Print Artist Platinum 22.  I tried starting up in SafeMode for Window (using Win 7) but it didn't make any difference. This should disable many of the system resources you suggest are causing a problem.

I also tried to uninstall the most recent Adobe Reader progam and install the one that came with Print Artist Platinum 22.  This didn't help.  It doesn't matter which computer (both Win 7) I try.

Is there a patch?  Print Artist Gold 24 had even more glitches (wouldn't let me save after the first time... appears to be a common error too) so I uninstalled that and reinstalled 22 with SOME hope.  At least I can get something done (I like the program but not the glitches) and it does me no good if I can't export the work to a file that I can send to be professionally printed.

Lisa,

Are you running a 64bit installation of Windows 7?

Lisa N says:

No, it's 32 bit.

I have made a little bit of progress with throuble shooting. There were 4 pages that I was able to copy and past to a new document to help me figure out what is causing the glitch. I had two pages that would shut down when I tried to even copy anything on that page. So, I recreated those pages fresh on the new document.... same error when trying to create a PDF file. Is there a size limit the document must be under to create the PDF file?

Lisa,

I have not particularly noticed any size limit with the program. I suspect the issue has something to do with one of the elements that are on those pages. As a test, you can create a new project that matches the number of pages you are trying to convert right now. Then, pick one of the problem free pages from your original project and copy/paste it onto each page of your new project. Then, try to convert the new project to PDF.

If the project converts, then we know it is not a problem with page limits, but something on those two "problem" pages. If that is the case, you may want to look to see if there is some commonality between the two "problem" pages. For example, do they both have the same image on them that does not appear on the working pages? Or some other element they share that does not appear on the working pages?

The pages did not have any of the same images on them.  They did not have shared or connected text. Even if I deleted the contents of one page, I still got the error. I gave up I had to completely rebuild the two pages in a fresh project, that were giving me the errors when trying to copy to the new project.  I don't know what was giving me the problem on either of the two pages because EVERY individual item that I tried to copy would cause the program to error and shutdown. It would have taken me HOURS to delete individual items and then try to see if I had an error and then restart the program.

It would have been nice to be able to pin point what was glitching. Now, I DO save after every change and after a few changes, I'm also converting to pdf file. For anyone who is getting these errors and the program is shutting down, you should start over with a blank document... you will never find the glitch.  I spend 5x as much time trying to figure this all out than it took me to build the base of the project.  As a user, I shouldn't have to troubleshoot something that I have read more than once to be an error with PrintArtist programs.

Lisa,

As you yourself proved, the problem is not strictly with the program. If that was the case, you never would have been able to export to a PDF no matter what you tried to do. Since the problem only occurs with those two particular pages, this points to something about those two pages that are causing a problem with the program. Unfortunately, without being able to identify why this is happening on your system, there is not really a way for the developers to fix it.

I can appreciate the amount of work that may be involved with trying to pin point the cause of the problem. However, without having any information to go on, the developers would not know where to begin to address the problem you are experiencing. If you ever do pin point what may be causing the problem, please let me know. I would be happy to pass that information on to the developers for them to investigate.

Hi -- I have had the program for about 6 weeks and haven't had any problem creating, saving, and printing several signs, posters, and banners.

I am now trying to create a newspaper and have had it freeze up / crash on me repeatedly.  I am able to create and save a couple of times, and then any edit followed by clicking save again triggers a crash.  I have reinstalled the program twice and downloaded the patch obtained here.  I have recreated a paper with "trial" text and graphics and it saved and was recalled safely over a period of a couple of days. I took those same pages and converted the saved text to the actual, longer text I intended to print and after saving 2 x it crashed.  I thought that would be ok, since I had carefully saved all along.  When I attempted to reopen the project.... I can still see all the text in the thumbnail version but when I open the project only the title text and all the clip art is present.

This is sooo frustrating, as newspapers have a deadline and I told everyone I had a great and easy to use publishing program so I would be responsible for the editing / printing / publishing.  Now we are way past deadline and I am not making any progress.

Please help!  (I have also restarted, run my virus program scan, ran a debug initiated by PAGold 24 and yelled at the computer, to no avail.)

thanks. -- spacey

Spacey,

It sounds like you are dealing with a couple of different issues. The first is the problem with it crashing when saving. The second is opening one of those previously saved projects.

In your situation, I think the two issues are partially intertwined. In this situation, we have to determine the source of the problems.

Now, I need to point out that if you are working with a file and the program crashes on you, there is a chance that project file became corrupted at that point. So, continuing to work with that file may cause errors to appear in the project and may cause further crashing of the program. It sounds like from your description that a number of the crashes were happening with files that were opened previously when it crashed. So, this may be contributing to the number of crashes you are seeing.

I am interested in the testing that you performed with your "trial" text. It sounds like in that example the problem only appeared once you converted it over to the longer text. Could you explain to me step-by-step what you did to convert that trial text to the longer text?
