Greeting Card Factory Deluxe Version 9 Can't open older version cards graphics

I have today purchased and downloaded the new version 9 of Greeting Card factory deluxe and when I try to open a card that i have saved in version 8, I find that the graphics are not displaying. All I am getting is diagonal colured lines, is there anything that I can do to remedy this please.

David,

Are the graphics the ones that were pre-designed on the card? Or were they graphics you added yourself like photos or images from the clip art library?

Hi Robby,

the graphics are both the pre-designed on the original card and also some that I had added from the graphics library. I would like to be able to open and use previous designs as I have been using Greeting Card factory since version 2, and find it the best programme for cards.

David,

I apologize. Since my last message, I have received posts from a couple of other people mentioning similar problems with opening older projects in version 9. I spoke with the developers about this and they did confirm for me that you will experience problems opening older projects in version 9.

Part of the issue lies in the fact that not all of the images from older version will be found in the new version or in the same place in the new version. They said that they had to make these changes due to some contractual reasons. Your issue with the diagonal lines are prime example of this problem with a project that uses graphics that are either no longer in the program or relocated.

After some playing around, I think I have a way that you can work around this issue. What you would need to do is install version 8 after version 9 has been installed. You cannot install version 8 and then version 9, as version 9 checks for previous versions. However, version 8 does not have the ability to check if version 9 is installed. So, as long as they are both installed in reverse order, you should be able to install both at the same time. Once they are both installed, you should be able to copy/paste your designs from version 8 saved projects into new projects for version 9.

Now, I will warn you that the software was not really designed to have multiple versions installed at the same time. So, you may see some strange issues with version 9 after version 8 is installed. However, thus far, I have not seen anything that prevents both programs from running. In fact, the only strange thing I have seen so far is that version 9 is now showing version 8 on the program window even though the Help - About is showing version 9.

If for some reason you are unable to run it this way, you can simply uninstall both programs, version 8 and then version 9, and reinstall version 9 by itself.

Because it is not yet available from Avanquest in the UK (!), I purchased a download of Greeting Card 9 directly from Nova Developments in the USA. I have used the previous four versions with outstanding results and wanted to update the Greeting Card 8 software that I had been using.

What an unmitigated disaster that decision has been! A large proportion of work done on previous versions won't open correctly and I have lost hours and hours of work. BE WARNED! If you have saved projects from previous versions of Greeting Card you will be bitterly disappointed with Greeting Card 9.

I have tried to contact Nova Developments without any success. My e-mails go unanswered and it is impossible to find a telephone number for anyone who might throw light on this problem and/or tell me if there is an update on the way which will enable me to open the projects I made previously. The 'Live Chat' facility on their 'support' site doesn't open and like many other software manufacturers their website just takes you round-and-round in very frustrating circles. I have ended up uninstalling V9, putting V8 back onto my computer and wasting c$50 into the bargain.

So the caveat is: WAIT and see if Nova Developments address the problem. You will doubtless see mention of it on softcity.com following on from all the howls of protest from those who have been duped into buying this program. If an update is NOT forthcoming and you are expecting to satisfactorily open some of the projects that you've created in a previous version STICK WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT!

Dianne,

As I mentioned to David previously, regardless of where you purchased the software, you are going to experience problems opening prior version's project files in version 9. Additionally, you may see further complications arise from opening projects in the US version of the program that were created in the UK version of the program. These are two separate builds of the program with different paper sizes/types in each build.

Unfortunately, there will be no update to allow opening prior version's project files. Due to contractual reasons, files and graphics that were part of prior versions of the program are no longer included in version 9. Those removed files and graphics are required to successfully open all previous version's project files. The same contractual reasons prevent any future update to allow those older projects to open in version 9.

As I also mentioned to David, you should be able to install both versions of the program on your computer at the same time. In order to do so, you must uninstall all versions of the program. Then, install version 9. After it is installed, you should be able to install version 8. Doing this will allow you to continue to work with those older projects in version 8 and allow you access to the new content in version 9.

Dear Robby,

I am very grateful for your detailed response to my earlier posting but equally very disappointed to read that no 'fix' for the problem is likely to be forthcoming. There must be many, many users like myself who have spent hours and hours making scores of cards etc over the years using this otherwise excellent software to produce them - only to find now that they can no longer use any of these previous designs as templates. I really think potential buyers of Greeting Card v9 should have been made aware of this pitfall before they made the decision to buy.

From my own standpoint, I now have about 3-4 years work which is totally useless and I will be looking to find a more reliable program just as soon as I can. All very, very irritating. I take your point of loading 8 & 9 on the same computer but it's messy, isn't it and I would much rather the software had worked as previous versions.

Just a thought - but is it possible to pull the graphics out of version 8 and into an appropriate place (wherever that might be!) in version 9?

Thanks again for taking the trouble to post a reply to me.

Best wishes.

Dianne

Robby E. says:

Dianne,

Unfortunately, due to those contractual reasons, the developers could not come up with a way that they could bring in prior version's projects into the new version. I am fairly certain that if they could find a way to open the older projects in the newer version, they would have done so. I doubt that they would want to lose customer over something they could fix.

Regarding your question about pulling graphic files from version 8 and inserting them into version 9, I doubt that is possible. The information for the graphics are hard coded into the program. Meaning that the program knows that if you want graphic "X" it is found in position "Y' of file "Z". With them removing graphics from the program, they no longer have a reference to which file those graphics are found in. So, even if you copy the graphics files from version 8 into version 9, version 9 does not have anything in the program to tell them that those graphics exist, much less where in the files they are located. On top of that, since the graphics have been removed, I am pretty sure the existing graphic files have also changed. So, copying those over may break the existing version 9 installation.

Dear Robby,

Thanks again for your detailed reply. It looks as if I'll just have to live with it then - but it is so disappointing, as I've said previously. I have had hours of enjoyment with the all Greeting Card software that I've bought over the years and have never encountered a problem. It is such a pity that Nova Developments couldn't have had compatibility with previous versions in the forefront of their minds when they brought out v9. There will no doubt be lots of people tearing their hair out at the prospect of having to re-do all their projects; I wonder, are we going to have to contend with it all over again when v10 is released?

Very many thanks for the time you've given on this subject.

Warmest regards from one of your poor relations 'over the pond!'

That just made my decision not purchase version 9.  I will just keep my 8 and enjoy it.  I was seriously thinking about getting the 9 until I read about all the problems.  Like the people before me mentioned ...I have years of work with the older versions as well and have saved them from year to year.  I WOULD HATE TO LOSE ALL THAT WORK FOR SURE!!

Yes, I agree with you Joan and believe you have made the right decision! Version 9 of Greeting Card has obviously been a big disappointment to all those loyal customers who have purchased previous issues - and it IS such a shame because the programme otherwise is brilliant. However, to loose all previous designs .....!!

Robby E. says:

Joan/Dianne,

For clarification, not all graphics that were in previous versions were removed from version 9. So, you may find that some of your older projects will open with no problems in version 9. However, without a comprehensive list of the graphics that were removed from the program or a way to tell which of your projects may have used those graphics, there is no way to tell you which projects may or may not load properly. I mention this because there are some older version's projects that still load correctly in version 9. It just depends on whether your project used one of the missing graphics or not.

I am totally disappointed as well!  Years of work are now shot to hell.  I have version 9 installed on my Windows 7 Home Premium on an iMac OSX.  Obviously, my Mac is not the issue.  I can open all my old projects - but the photos of my paintings are gone replaced by these garish pink and green lines!  I decided to try to save a new project.  Guess what - the project came up but no photo.  In it's place were the pink and green lines.  So this program can't even save it's own files?!!!  New files?  We should have been notified before this purchase.  Now I'm looking for something to replace this unbelievable mistake. - Kathy H
