PowerDesk Patch 1 Ready to GO!

[Edit the Patch was made live on Monday August 16th, 2010]

Greetings,

Let me introduce myself--my name is Mark Manes and I am the VP of Product Development / Engineering for Avanquest’s Utility Division. As you can see from the new forums here at SoftCity you can tell we are working toward improving support and most importantly listening to your feedback.

PowerDesk 8 is an interesting product for my team. In some sense we are learning it as we go as we have a new development team and product management team working on it. We think on the whole the product is a solid upgrade from PowerDesk 7 yet there are issues. It is a challenge in developing a product that has to span the variety of versions of Windows we support. It is also a challenge in that our users are very dedicated to the product and thus a change impacts users in ways we do not always expect.

PowerDesk 8 is just the first step in our aggressive product plans. Over time I will share with the community where we think we are going to go to get your feedback and hopefully your support. We hope to make as many customers as happy as possible as we move forward.

For now I would like to share with you the list of issues we have fixed for PowerDesk 8 – Patch 1. We hope to push out this release early next week. Our plans releasing our international versions and then coming back for second patch based on the success and your feedback for patch 1.

Feel free to leave your comments here.

Chuck Arbaugh says:

It is refreshing to see a renewed interest in improving Powerdesk.  I have been using it since version 4, and it is the best Explorer replacement that I have used.   The upgrade to 6 was underwhelming, and  7 and 8 have been disappointing.  I am looking forward to getting this patch so that I can starting using the product on my Windows 7 64 bit system.

Go Mark!

Hopefully you will write a happier review of PD 8 when patch 1 is released.. looks like early next week. There are some really nice new features in PD 8, not to mention a much better looking UI.

Definitely not trying to be a Debbie Downer.  My suspicion is that the product hasn't received the attention that it needed due to a variety of reasons.  That was disappointing as a big fan of the software.

I'm just happy to see new enthusiasm and support here and I am looking forward to the patch so I can start using my favorite desktop software again!!

Cheers

This is my first purchase of Powerdesk and I'm a little disappointed that I have lost some of my context menus that I have available using Windows Explorer. IE I use Tag and Rename with my MP-3 files and I have the option to "Open in Tag and rename" in explorer but not with Powerdesk. Maybe I missed something in setup, but I haven't been able to find what it is. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

I had purchased PowerDesk 8 when I got my new Windows 7 64 bit computer. I had to uninstall it and get a refund when I couldn't access Programs and Features after setting PowerDesk to replace Windows Explorer. I would be happy to repurchase it if this patch takes care of that problem.

I also have been a PDP users since about Version 3.  Just bought Ver 8 for use on a Vaio running 7 Enterprise 64 bit.  To my astonishment, when dragging files from one page to another, the receiving pane does not refresh.  If you try it a second time, you get a message that it already exists in the target pane, but it does not display.

Same holds true for deletions.  I have to go in and out several times before the displays work correctly - it does not inspire confidence and is slow and annoying.  I did not see that issue addressed in your Patch 1.  Is that going to be in there?

For me this would be a real deal-breaker, I hope you have plans to fix this.

Thanks

My thanks for maintaining a Xtree type utility with so many extra features, which I have become accustom to enjoying. However, I am frustrated that the Live-update has issues and no apparent work-a-round yet. It seems obvious that this patch is designed to repair at least a few of the non-functional parts of PowerDesk Pro 8, but does not allow for a manual patch while Live update is being debugged.  I have been in tech-support since before Big Blue hinted they might get into the Personal Computer Market --a while back, because of this I know a patch should never be released via a process that is buggy and unusable. There should be a manual process until the automatic process is fully tested and functional. That is my opinion.

Mark Manes says:

James,

The LiveUpdate module has been around and tested for years. The issue 99.5% of the time has to do with some firewall issue related to the network you are attached to.

In any case--I should have a link available that I will post that will let you download the patch using a web browser for those few who have issues with LiveUpdate.

Using Win 7 64 Bit, using Live Update, Error Number:0x5, Description: Invalid registry key. Software\Avanquest\PowerDesk -- Download -Good, Reinstalled Original PowerDesk Pro 8, Re-booted, retried ,3 times. I have also edited my registry to remove potential bad information and then reinstalled from scratch again, with the Same result.

Searched Avanquest for solution -None Found, but reports from others of similar issues - no solutions. Found SoftCity --no solution yet. I was unable to find any manual process for this patch. I am aware of many of the issues listed in the original message, and so I am looking forward to some repairs.

Your assistance in getting the patches to us users is appreciated and anticipated. - Thank you.

We just released the patch yesterday--the issue is not LiveUpdate but the installer and we have had one other customer who is reporting the registry issue you are seeing. We will have a look at this.

We obviously did not see this in our many weeks of testing and it is only impacting a small group of customers (for some reason).

I am sorry you are having the problem--but we are one it.

Another long time PD user here. I found PD8 clashed with the ASUS Xonar's GUI. Consequently the Xonar was unable to remember a number of it's settings. I reported this issue and was told the developers could not come up with a fix.

I was obligated to seek a refund for PD8.

Looking over the list of fixes I don't see it mentioned. Was it even looked at?

In the meantime PD7 is adequate and I'd buy PD8 again if the issue was addressed.

Window's 7 isn't approved for use on my work machine yet so I've tried running PD8 under Windows Vista Enterprise. I'm having trouble with my directories not refreshing.  There are new files that I know are in certain folders that PD8 won't find, and nothing happens when I try to refresh.  I can fire up Windows Explorer and find the files just fine.  Sometimes after I reboot PD8 will find the files and sometimes even that doesn't help.  Unless there's a fix I'm going to have to give up on PD8.

Are you using the patch? We specifically worked on refresh issues in this release. Not saying that you're not having a problem just would like to collect more information--is the issue on local disks or network volumes?

Can I assume that you are running the latest Vista--with all updates applied?

Woodrow says:

Well dag blam it Mark, I was assured the issue was passed to the Developers right around July 1.

Anyhow, this is a Gigabyte GA-MA790fx mobo, Phenom 2 955, 4 gig ram, Asus Xonar D2X, Asus 5870 and Vista X64 HP.

For some mysterious reason I started getting BSOD STOP 124 frequently while gaming. I also noticed I couldn't control some options with the Xonar's GUI. Whatever was causing the lack of Xonar control was causing/resulting in the BSODs. After many unfruitful trials of disabling everything and cleaning and what not I decided to partition off 30gig and create a fresh OS install. That done I updated it to SP2, installed latest Cat, and Xonar's driver noted below. PCI-D2X-090923-V81775-Vista_W73264-RC-01.zip
from FTP://FTP.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/Audio_Card/Xonar_D2X/Carrying on, I got my Steam library online and everything was good until installing PD8 at which time the Xonar GUI lost it's brain again. System restore corrected the issue though. FWIW, after installing PD8 all is good until the computer is reset, then the Xonar GUI is effected. As noted previously, I'm back to using PD7 without issues. Thanks for listening.

Those folks who are having trouble with the LiveUpdate patch where you get a registry error--do you have Norton 360 or some other registry cleaning applicaitons? If so--could you please post the name of the product and version number. There is a theory that one of these products is damaging the registry keys of PowerDesk. We would like to see if that is the case as we cannot reproduce the issue here at all.

Thanks!

I have been using PowerDesk for many years and when I upgraded my computer to Win 7 64bit had to finally go with Directory Opus 64bit. I still prefer the PowerDesk ability to see my files in the view panel and the file finder utility that comes with the program, but it feels more like a beta program than a final version. I installed it alongside Directory Opus and do use it sometimes but for most of my work I have to rely on Directory Opus because the GUI of PowerDesk is not working well in my computer. Hope you guys keep working on it to make it the superb file manager that it could be.

I have a privacy concern with PD8 Pro with Patch 1, since it apparently combines the registration process (required to keep running after a few starts) with the authentication process. Even Microsoft doesn't do that. Microsoft prompts inform the user that "no personal information" is being transmitted during the authentication process. There is a reason for that. I purchased thru Avanquest and they already have user info, including credt card data. Where is registration & authentication info (machine data, IP address also) going and toward what end? Tying individual personal data (possibly including credit card info) to hardware, IP address, authentication codes, etc., makes hacking and identity theft much easier should servers be compromised. Linking authentication and registration was a bad decision. Please correct so the program authenticates without REQUIRING registration, and in a separate process.
