PowerDesk 8 Patch 2 TEST Build

REVISED: Now with an updated build that fixes:

- Saving Toolbar settings
- Crash issue when reviewing the System32 folder
- Force Refresh should now work.

Greetings all,

At the request of those frequent posters here on SoftCity we were asked to let you have a look at the patches prior to making them live. We are going to honor that request. The link below will let you download the FULL build of PowerDesk 8 (version 8.3.1.7).

This is a test build but it has been qualified; meaning that we have run it through quality assurance many times. Still we would like your opinion before we release it.

Here are a couple of caveats though:

- This is a BETA release and a TEST release. Meaning that you will not get support from our technical support group.

- You will need your serial number in order to install.

- You will need to uninstall your prior version of PD 8 before this one will install.

- You MUST reboot after the install as the installer tells you to. Failure to comply will likely result in an unhappy computer and an unhappy you.

- If you are unhappy with the build; you can uninstall and re-install your prior product which is fully supported.

Ok.. here is the link: http://www.avanquestusa.com/download/PowerDesk_8319_full.exe

To provide feedback on the build I started a conversation here.

So far, so good. Download and install was uneventful. It even remembered my preferred layout! Hooray!

Haven't really noticed any difference yet from the previous PD8

oh no!  same problem as before with the ZIP extraction process.  It erases everything on destination folders.

with V7, at home I compress the files I changed, I go to the office, extract on specific Drive... done! all my files are in sync with home.

with V8, at home I compress the files I changed, I go to the office, extract on specific Drive... catastrophe!  everything is gone except the few files I ZIP at home.

That's unacceptable.

Also, when checking some ZIP files, it was working just fine until I select a file with only a TXT file (534,000 bytes) on it.... it crash.... I tried a couple of times more doing something different and it crash again.

:(

I love powerdesk V 7.0... V 8.0?  not so much

I've been looking seriously at installing Power Desk.  I just upgraded an older Toshiba to Win 7 and thought I would add Power Desk to that computer.  BUT, I now think I'll wait and see how this pans out.  I would be using it to get away from Windows Explorer issues.  If Power Desk has it's own issues, I'd be swapping one problem for another, you know?

I think I'll wait awhile longer before installing PD, and see how Win 7 runs on that computer.  Thanks guys for being so honest about how programs work and what bugs might still be causing issues.  It's important to note.  I've had enough problems lately without adding software problems too.

UGGGG!  Hex Editor problem solved.  A file must be selected before Tools, Hex Editor is selected.  I was trying to open Hex Editor without first selecting a file.  False alarm.  My apology.

Edit - oops, did not intend to post this here.

I really dislike installers that need a re-boot. If you create the setup with a smart installer, then there is practically nothing that needs a re-boot. i.e. add Registry entries, stop and re-start a Service, etc...

PD V8 does not do that on my PC. I am running Win7 64bit.

John, if you use CTRL-E it will erase everything under the first folder (be careful).

If using the Icon on the toolbar you'll have same results.

If it doesn't work you have to activate "EXTRACT ALL OF THE FILES TO ONE LEVEL" on the Zip/Unzip tab.

I can tell you how DANGEROUS this issue is (I lost 28 GB of data in my office... I had all backup at home). Came home and reproduce the problem.

Right now I took the icon from toolbar and switch shortcut action for CTRL-E to "NOTHING".

Right-Clicking the zip file and selecting Extract works just fine.

After many months I'm using PD 8.0 at home and I'm thinking on installing my 2nd license at the office soon.

Fernando, I just tested again extracting using CTRL-E and did not see that problem. Also tried ZIPs with and without relative path stored. All worked as expected and did not delete any other files. I have my ZIP file on C:\temp and am extracting to D:\Temp

other files already in d:\temp are still there after the extract. PDPro is not my favourite explorer substitute program, but I use it sometimes.

John, I use XP. My tests were done with 2 five level sub-folders (with 3 levels in common). Maybe under Win 7 there is no problem. I'm worried somebody else might lose data that has no backup. This is being tested by Brian Doud. Hopefully he will get more information.... just be careful.

Mark Manes says:

John... if only that were true .. :) There are some sub-systems that cannot be stopped/ unloaded without a reboot. The installer asks the operating system whether it needs to reboot for a given module (in particular MS often provides updated that modules require a reboot) and if the OS says it must reboot.. we must. I hate to have to reboot too.. but different software operates within different levels of the OS. As an example an accounting application that has little reliance on system level features will not need a reboot where system utilities often do. It is the nature of Windows that is getting better but still present. However even in that case.. if the software is using .NET 4 and the system has .NET 3 then .NET 4 gets installed and yep.. baby that is a reboot.

Still having the same issue I was having before this release. I use dual-pane mode. So say the top pane is at C:\ and the bottom pane is at D:\ and I exit the program. When I open it back up both panes are at "My Computer" - it's not keeping the folder settings. I haven't checked the other issues, this what what I checked first.

Make sure Options -> Save Settings On Exit is deselected. Then setup the screen the way you want and select Options -> Save Settings Now. Exit, restart and see what you've got. In the future, if you want to return to the same screen as when you exited, be sure Options -> Save Settings On Exit is selected.

I have been using this program for years.  I think I started with version 3 and I have enjoyed them all up until now.  To me this is the buggiest one.  I would open a zip file, CRASH.  The program would not refresh after some functions (Moving files, making directories etc.).  Now with this version (8.3.1.9) there is some stability, but at a price.  It takes 3 to 4 minutes for the program to refresh a screen.  I am very disappointed and will probably go to Directory OPUS.  Sorry

Whenever I hear of others NOT having the problems that I have, I think "conflict," and start a long and arduous troubleshooting session. More often than not, it's unsuccessful and a new OS install solves the problem.

I got curious about Directory Opus so I went to see some screen shots.  wow! The program has like 1,000 options that you can configure. Plus is trying to be an image viewer program too.

If you have 2 or 3 weeks to learn all the options available in D.O. go ahead. By the way: the have a place where you can setup what folders or systems you want to skip while using D.O..... mmmm... that might be a good idea for PD8 and those 'nasty Microsoft folders'.

I love the simplicity of PD8.0.  Yes it has issues, many of them have been resolve. I will stick with the software that has simplify my life for the past 5 years and save me so much time. What PD8 does it does it with simplicity. I don't need 300 buttons on my screen at all times. I want to go from folders to files with a single TAB. I'm sure PD8 (which I'm using right now to my entire satisfaction) or maybe PD9 will get to the "promise land".

Joe McCormick says:

What do MyComputer, Explore ++, and FreeCommander have in common?

Well, first of all, they're free file managers, and second when you double click on the icons, the programs open almost immediately.

Now let's compare PowerDesk  Pro 8 to those three programs.

First of all it is not free, and second, when you click on the art icon, you wait....... and wait...... and wait...... and wait....... then finally the program will open.

Why does PowerDesk  Pro 8 take so long to open when the other programs open almost immediately?

PowerDesk  Pro 4, 5 and 6 used to be great programs in my opinion. PowerDesk  Pro 7 and 8 are just so-so. 7 Used to lock up quite often. 8 it is almost as bad.

Gary Williams says:

Joe,

Like you, I do not have problems with any other program.  However, when I click on PD8 it opens almost immediately.  I tried an experiment and I wonder if this might be your issue.  I set up PD8 the way I want it to start, then I click Options, Save Settings Now.  I DO NOT click Save Settings on Exit.  I set the focused folder in the folder list to the root of my data disk (there are only 8 main folders defined).  As the experiment, I changed the folder list focus to a folder that contains 8000+ files and saved the settings.  I quit PD8 and when I clicked on the icon to start it again, it took several minutes to for the PD8 window to appear.

So, bottom line ... check the focused folder when you start the program - be sure it is not a folder that contains a lot of files.  I hope this helps.

Regards,

Gary

Joe -

It opens immediately.

When I refer to "system problems," it may not be something that's obvious, but more like the "perfect storm." Or, the slowness might be the result of a conflict between PD8 and a program that YOU'VE got, but others don't.

Assuming you're running a Windows-based OS, have you tried booting into Safe Mode, then launching PD8?

To Lawrence and Gary. I opened PowerDesk Pro 8. I then click on options, then Restore System Defaults. I then clicked on Save Settings Now. I closed PowerDesk. I then clicked on the Power Desk icon. To my surprise, the program opened almost immediately. Before I was waiting about 8 seconds before it opened. I did notice that most of my icons on the launch bar were missing. No big deal. I added the icons that I had before. I don't know what happened. I have been dealing with the slow opening four months. I'm not sure what the Restore System Defaults did, but it did seem to fix my problem.
