How to Burn an ISO on Mac OSX Natively

This is a tip i stumbled upon from on the macworld hints site, while trying to figure out how to burn an ISO image to a DVD natively.  I figured tihs was possible, since it can be done natively on BSD, and Mac OSX is based on one of the BSD derivatives.

the question was HOW?  On Ubuntu Linux, its as simple as right click on the ISO image and clicking on Burn ISO image.  If you try the same thing on OSX, it will write the ISO to the disc, as a file, not a disc image.

The appropriate steps are as follows.

  1. Insert your blank disc
  2. Start Disk Utility program
  3. From the File menu ( has to be the menu, there is no Icon shortcut that i am aware of), choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.
  4. In the list of volumes that appear, you will now see an item representing the ISO file. Select the item with the ISO extension
  5. Click the Burn Icon ( looks like a danger symbol
  6. Follow the instructions
