Using Mac Os Mail 4.x / Mac Os Snow Leopard, I was surprised to see my Gmail/All messages folder growing and growing.
Also, sometimes, when writing a new email, multiple versions of the email were saved and never deleted in the draft folder.
And using Mac OS Mail with an exchange 2003 account, throw an Imap proxy, was another source of troubles : emails deleted from mac os mail were never deleted in the exchange mailbox, and this one was growing and growing ...
I tried many tricks to fix those issues, but always have some persistent troubles and I finally discover an advanced setting, not often described in all the topics I read for these problems : the menu item Use this mailbox for in the mailbox menu.
For each of your imap account, you have to associate 'system mailbox' from Mac os mail with the system labels, as the associations are not always correctly selected automatically.
There are 4 system folders to setup correctly. Below is the setting for a Gmail account, you should adapt the folder names with another email provider.
- select Drafts in your account | [Gmail] | Drafts in the folder list.
- and in the Mailbox menu (BAL in french), select Use This Mailbox For | Drafts from the menu.
- select Sent Mail in your account | [Gmail] | Sent Mail in the folder list.
- and in the Mailbox menu (BAL in french), select Use This Mailbox For | Sent from the menu.
- select Trash in your account | [Gmail] | Trash in the folder list.
- and in the Mailbox menu (BAL in french), select Use This Mailbox For | Trash from the menu.
- select Spam in your account | [Gmail] | Spam in the folder list.
- and in the Mailbox menu (BAL in french), select Use This Mailbox For | Junk from the menu.
Let me know if this helps
