You would think being the son of foreign immigrants, born and raised in, of all places, Montreal, a town known for its multicultural, French dominated, English suppressed atmosphere, that I’m probably some trilingual, well rounded, and tolerant person. Well you would be wrong. I’m very anti-social, passive aggressive, and far from trilingual. I don’t speak my parents native tongue, I’m barely passable in French, and let’s face it my English is not that great. Add to that the myriad of friends of different cultures at school, and this is why I use Translate Now! by AccelaStudy. This free iPhone/iPod Touch app can translate words and phrases between a whopping 43 different languages. This should allow you to communicate with almost anyone you can possibly meet on a daily basis.
The app is separated into two boxes. The one on top is where you put the thing you want to translate in the language you know, probably english. Below, after selecting the language you want, is where you get your translated result. Its very simple, pick English on top, select the desired translation at the bottom, like Portuguese, type in what you want to translate on top, hit the little green arrow, and voila. However, this system is not perfect. Not every language uses the standard English alphabet to display its results. Chinese uses Chinese characters, and Ukrainian uses Ukrainian characters, and so on. So if you can’t read Arabic, translating something into it is kind of useless. I found a way around this, just show the result to the person you’re translating for. It’s a good thing you can E-mail the translation directly from the app.
