THE INCREDIBLES - An online app directory for Android but not from Google

Did you know it’s possible to browse and install Android apps from a web interface

How? AppBrain

On  their website (www.appbrain.com) they list all Android Apps and allow you to sync the one you selected via their own Android App manager/installer (called "AppBrain Market Sync" and available on the Android market for Free)

In clear, Browse the app directory on www.appbrain.com from a desktop computer and use this app to install and uninstall the apps you selected on that website.

Easily find what you are searching for

The browser allows you to filter by:

  • All
  • Free only
  • Paid only
  • New
  • Updated
  • Price drop
  • Latest

When you register using your Gmail account (same as on the phone) to the website you can create your own app lists (i.e. Work apps, Personal Apps, etc...) and then sync these lists with your phone, you can also sync your phone apps (already installed) with your online AppBrain account so you are sure to always keep a list of all your apps in case you crash your phone or change it.

Helpful features:

  • "Recommended for you" section (it analyse the apps you have on your lists and propose you similar or complementary apps)
  • "Currently Viewed" are the apps that other peoples are looking for
  • "Hot on AppBrain" is a kind of charts of the most viewed/downloaded apps on AppBrain
  • Automatic filtering of "Spam Apps", it allows you to hide apps that have been published in a high number from a same developer (and also based on bad or no rating)

In clear it is the best way to keep all your apps synced with an online account (without risks to loose them and don't remember which one you had)

In the same category of Android online directories you also have:

www.androlib.com has in addition to app list, thousands of wallpapers, app/device videos and Market stats but no advanced sync with your phone...

Update: Google announced at Google I/O a web-based Android market on its future version. It will have very tight integration with your Android device, allowing installation of apps on your phone by a single click from your desktop's browser (no availability date yet).

Thank you for sharing this good application.

If you are interested in this kind of applications, you probably be interested in goojet.com, same way to do except they propose also home made applications and they are multi-platform, big lack is : specialized in French apps...cocorico!

Brian Weiss says:

Seems to be exactly what the android market should have been, web based capability, searching all aps, and a ton of filters. I just worry about even one more company having my personal info and building a profile on me. What if the world is taken over by Pandora loving martians and they want to know who didn't have Pandora then I'd be a marked man!

Tim Browning says:

Excellent application ... as Brian said, everything that the 'Market' should be.

Had a slight issue with re-installing apps after a total wipe and re-install of an updated version of the OS, but that was possibly my fault.

Great apps.

Romain Criton says:

I still don't understand why Google hasn't "fixed" the Android Market sooner (I know they're supposedly going to implement browser front-end and over the air sync when Froyo is available). Everyone complained about it, yet those guys, with all their cash and manpower and search algorithms waited for years before improving it.

Breaking Software says:

One handy trick I found for Appbrain is to set up apps for yourself to perform on a clean install.  I created a directory on Appbrain for things like Handcent/Advanced Taskiller and others I consider must have Droid apps.  The rest are in another category labeled optional apps and expands as I find more to keep on the phone.

If you sync your contacts through Google Contacts (like a good Droid user should) you will basically have a phone you can't possibly break by recklessly installing and downloading.
