In an App Far Far Away

Whether you think space exploration is a colossal waste of money or the coolest thing ever, I admit I’m on the latter, but politics aside, NASA’s accomplishments are regarded as awe inspiring feats of technical achievement for mankind. Space, the final frontier, its technically all around us, and now it can be in your pocket. The free NASA app provides 24 hour coverage of everything NASA related right on your iPhone/iPod Touch.

On the NASA app you get everything you can possibly think of, from shuttle launch schedules, weather delays notwithstanding, to overviews of every mission and project, like the Hubble Space Telescope or the Mars Exploration Rovers. There is a total of 62 past, current, and future missions on display. You can scroll through recent news updates, images, videos, and timetables of each mission. All of the above can be easily searched and filtered to your liking.

One of the cool features is that you can see in real time the location of certain satellites in relation to your current location. For example, the Hubble Space Telescope is currently over the Indian Ocean, orbiting towards Australia. This is great for any of you amateur astronomers out there wanting to catch a glimpse of a satellite. You can save the images provided to your device or email them to that space fan in your life. The videos are taken from the NASA Television channel, streamed through Youtube. Its not the most compelling thing on TV, but you might get a kick out of all the behind the scenes action over at NASA, so take a look.
