Food Spotting

If figuring out where to eat has been problem for you in the past, then grab your Urbanspoon and let it be your guide to good eats. This free iPhone/iPod Touch app takes the users current location and displays every available restaurant in their area. If you still can’t decide where to go, just give it a shake. A place, food type, and price range roulette will randomly suggest a place for you, and each wheel can be locked into a specific criteria in case you don’t want to go far, just want a cheap meal, or if you absolutely need to have Chinese that day.

You can also simply do a search or browse your results by neighbourhood, type of food, popularity, or even by feature, like places offering free Wi-Fi, or pick out the romantic spots for that impromptu date. In Scope mode, it shows you a map and provides directions to all the restaurants in relation to your current location. If you’re using that newfangled iPhone 3Gs, by pointing the phone in front of you, it activates the camera, the navigation, and compass to give you an interactive map of the places all around you in real time. It’s a really cool effect, it makes it look like there are giant pop up windows in the sky. When you’re done, write a review, save the restaurants to your favorites, and share and compare lists with your friends through the built-in Facebook connectivity. You will never go hungry again.

Urbanspoon is a great app.  I also highly recommend the Yelp app.  Does not have the cool slot/machine style search feature but has a large community and information reviews about restaurants near your current area or any city.

They just released a new version with numerous improvements.  Linky.
