Et tu iPad?

image

I spent most of my Easter break taking in all the iPad coverage, and I've come to the conclusion that I want one. Every second I am without an iPad I feel like I'm slowly dying on the inside. I need one, it will complete me. I've contemplated driving down to Vermont and hitting up a Best Buy there, but was talked out of it by a friend. We are no longer friends. I've been browsing Ebay and Craigslist looking for one, but they're going for double the price. So that's really not an option unless I go without food for a couple of weeks. Wait a minute maybe I can. Hold on I'll go check my fridge.

Damn my human need for food! Scratch that idea. I guess I'm going to have to wait like the rest of you. While we wait for Canada to get the magical Apple device here are my reasons to justify this seemingly insane purchase, and yes, I am fully aware of all the downsides of an iPad. No multitasking, no USB ports or card readers, locked down to the Apple app store, and those are just a few. When compared to a similarly priced laptop or netbook you sure don't get much bang for your buck, but that has always been Apples M.O. to begin with. So its hard to be bothered by the price, even if it doesn't include things that any normal laptop would have like a camera or keyboard, but I don't think its trying to be those things.

The iPad is not a laptop or a laptop replacement. It's a media consumption device. Or at the very most a light computing device, to check and write some Emails, watch some videos on Youtube, and catch up on some blogs. I don't see myself putting much music on this thing and going out for a jog. I have an iPod for that, but for lounging at home, school, or at my local coffee shop it looks perfect for those times I don't feel like pulling out my laptop just to look up a website or to watch something.

I am first and foremost a gamer at heart, and I'd be lying if I said I won't be playing games on it. However, if you are picking one up just as a gaming device the price does become a factor. No one in their right mind would pay upwards of 500$ for a GameBoy. Even consoles nowadays don't cost that much. The point I'm trying to make here is that the iPad is more than just a new way to play games.

Besides games, the thing I'm most excited for is the book reader aspect of the device. I'm a big comic reader, and love the idea of having dozens and dozens of comics at my fingertips wherever I go. Not to mention movies, TV shows, newspapers, and magazines in a sleek portable device. I've been in the market for an ebook reader for a while now. They go for 300$ to 400$, but when I heard about the iPad, with its huge color display, it seemed crazy not to spend a little more and get one.

I can't wait to get my hands on one. The iPad is scheduled to be released in Canada by the end of April. If you're gonna wait in line like me or if you just want to say how much of a fanboy I am, just leave your comments at the bottom.

A friend and I considered driving to the nearest Vermont Best Buy selling Apple products (Williston) but since the Best Buy stores were only getting a few units we drove a bit further to the Albany (NY) Apple Store and each grabbed a unit. It was a 4 hour drive. We left Montréal at 5:00AM and arrived there at 9:05AM. We waited in line a short while (we had a reservation) and were out of the store and on the road back at 9:45AM. I wouldn't exactly do this every month but that was a fun little trip - and since the device will undoubtedly be a little more expensive in Canada, it probably evens out in the end (we did declare it at customs and paid the GST/PST), financially.

I think that many people fall into two camps as the masses try to figure out what the iPad really means. I think there is the camp that wants to call it a "Big iPod Touch" and there is the other camp that includes myself that says this represents the beginning of the next revolution in computing. Is this device the actual revolution? Perhaps not. but it is the first in a series of device (much like the original iPod) that redefines how we interact with computers.

I was an early adopter of the original iPhone. I used to hear a lot people say I use my phone to make calls. These same people now have iPhones. I think the iPad will pull people in as people experience the window into the world it represents.

There is one element that is sad. Bill Gates almost ten years ago said that within 5 years everyone would use tablets. That vision was not realized mainly due to the cost associated with tablets and more importantly the lack of a complete ecosystem.

What people need to realize is that the iPad is just one part of the solution. You need content (web, music, video) and applications that are DESIGNED with the mobile user in mind. This is what Bill missed. He thought you could just make the hardware and stuff Windows on it.

I claim that is what HP is going to learn with the HP Slate as well.

Just like Bill Clinton said - "It's the economy stupid". I say this "It's the ecosystem stupid". This is where Apple gets it and no one else does.
