Site Critique and Suggestions

Well, I have been working on this for a few days and thought I would ask for suggestions.

http://theredneckprospector.ieasysite.com

This will be my personal site I use to inform people of my adventures in Northern California where I intend to do some prospecting for gold.  I am not wanting a great professional look, I want to keep it simple or as simple as possible.  The site is nowhere finished.

Any feedback will be welcomed eagerly.

Miguel Esquirol says:

Aligning of texts in the menu are a little off, an also the border widths are different in the main page unless is what you were looking for. The padding of the text in the main page (the distance between the text and the margin) is a little slow and the text looks cramped. Finally, the link redneckprospector.com appears hidden under the title in Personal Log.

In my haste to get this website out, I neglected the alingment of several things.  Sorry and thanks for reminding me that I have lots of clean up to do.

By the "Padding" I take you mean the bold text on some of the words?  If so, I want to use these words to link to other places in my site and to remote sites.  I have to use "Rich Text" in order to accomplish this with WebEasy and I am sure this is slowing loading.  Any advice to rectify this would be appreciated.

Finally, the link is not a link.  I decided not to use it as a link because it would only bring you right back to the website.  It is embedded, it is part of the heading I threw together with My Logo Maker.  Another header/logo is under construction.

On the subject of Header/Logo, would putting a Rebel Flag on it be offensive?  No other symbol represents Redneck as well.  I don't wish to offend people and I don't want to be recognized as being caught up with the Civil War.

Thanks Richard, as usual you are honest with your opinions, a trait I can respect!

Hi John - Sorry I skipped over this yesterday but things are crazy here and with SoftCitys changes, I have been really rushed. :)

I certainly agree with what Miguel says.  Something to research is "white space" and why it is important to leave "margins" all around text entries.  This is a 'readability' factor and people will be more apt to read the text you want them to read if it is presented in any easily read format.

Also, line length is a factor in readability.  Another item to look for and research a tad.

I am wondering why you chose to put your personal log on a static web page instead of including a blog area for your daily notes?  I assume this is a personal preference, but it may become harder to keep up with as time goes on.

You are so very right about the Blog.  I intend to do so as soon as I get a more better format on my website,  At the time, I am having a few medical problems but hopefully after my operation tomorrow things will be more open for me.

I am also concidering a Twitter and Facebook page.  A lot of my friends follow these two avenues and seem to be good socially.

Once I get to California in May I will be able to add photos and captions of my adventure.  The website is more a personal site and will be used for general information.

I am working on a "Mock" 3-collun look with less background color.  Frames will be less in number.  This has been mentioned several times and I agree, this site is too busy.

As for the text being too tight, I have no idea how to incorporate proportional spacing or spread the text out other than by size and I am afraid that may be too much.  (Comments on this are greatly welcome.

I am thinking my left column should contain Navigation, center will be the main topic, and left side for Pictures or links to important sites.  (Maybe an add or two for selling my gold!  LOL)

Thanks for the critique and do keep informing me as to how I can make it better.

I have just opened my Blog on Blogger and linked to it from my Intro page.  I have also moved my post comments to the blog and erased them from my website.

My DNS's have not been redirected yet so I have not linked back to the website from the blog.  I guess I will have to contact support and find out what I did wrong, it has been a week since I set up the redirect.

I am working on a different format and will exchange it over when I get closer to finalize the design.  I have gone with 14pt type face and cut the width to about 1/2 page, maybe a little less.

Any more suggestions would be nice.

Hi John :)

I like the newer layout better.  You could put all the text for the home page on that page though and elongate the page just a tad.  It does not seem necessary to put any on a second page.

Adding the blog will be much easier to update your notes too.

Thanks!  I tried putting all the text on one page but when I preview it, it does not show the complete text nor does it have scroll bars.

What do I need to do to get it to scroll?

I presume you got the scroll problem fixes in another thread. I think I remember that.

Your website is looking better all the time. You've certainly added quite a bit of info and pages since we took our first look.

You found GOLD?  Yippee!  you need to tell that story on the site. Or did I miss that?  I'll have to look again!

I haven't found gold yet, not in California until May 1st.  The gold in the pictures was some I panned out that I ordered on-line.  They sell what they call "Paydirt" or "Play Dirt" depending on who you buy from.

I can't wait 'till I get to Happy Camp, California!  When I do get there I will be replacing the misc. postings and putting in the good stuff.  I plan to do a lot of photography and write-ups of the area, from what I have seen this place is a small utopia or close to it.

I am trying to build a series of websites that will replace theredneckprospector.  I am not happy not being able to use different Meta Keywords for each page.  The only way I can think to do this is to make small websites for each section and link them together.  It will also be easier to do SEO since each website will be more defined to one subject.  Also load time should be reduced drastically.

John...

There is a way to make every page it's own.  When you build your website build each page as a separate .ALB.

When you upload these to the host, upload each .alb to it's own directory off the main directory.  You have to do the site structure (for navigation links) beforehand and be prepared to add to it as time goes on.

There is a lot of work at the beginning but the rewards later are fantastic, look here:

Web Easy Pro Organization Tips

Really study those images, they will show you how to set up a structure in advance.

If you need further help, we can discuss more here too.  Let me know who your hosting company is and perhaps I can help you get set up with all the directories you need online.  The directories will be your links from your web pages to one another.

theredneckprospector.com is with iEasy site.  I have a Business account with HostGator but nothing on it yet.  I use Hostgator because I can set-up several websites on one package, cuts my cost down a lot!  I use Filezilla as my FTP and used to know how to download on HostGators but I forgot how.

I work on limited memory retention, I had a stroke that attacked that portion of my brain.  Lucky me, no parallize!

Thanks!

Hi John.

I have two reseller accounts at HostGator too.  So we could be on the same page here with how to get...

1 - SEO your site with naming conventions (always a plus).

2 - Build each page as it's own .ALB.

3 - Upload without using WEP.  It's really easy if you have cpanel. Which you DO with HostGator.  You won't even need Firezilla, except for special files.

~~~~~
I understand the memory retention problem. Russ had a Subarachnoid hemorrhage in 1997 which left him with literally NO short term memory and some physical paralysis. He has his long term memory but short term is nil.  With hundreds of repetitions he can remember SOME things.
John Kendall says:
Eileen, in your article I believe you say to "Save" each page in a separate file but to have the "links" preset to the other pages.
I open a file to load the individual page files in.  Example "Redneck Prospecting.
Next I open a file for page 1.  Examlpe would be Welcome.
Last I open an .alb file containing the page. Example would be welcome.alb.
I do this for every page in the Redneck Prospecting file.
Is this what you meant?
Now I understand that the "Page Links" must be determined before hand.  So I am guessing that the link for the Welcome Page would be something like Redneck Prospecting/Welcome/welcome.alb
Is this correct?  or  Would I use my "Properties" for each page as the link?
On using HostGator's cPanel to upload files, Can you tell me how you are doing this?  This will make my life a lot easier because I will be able to keep my sites separate, I think.  Filezilla is a bit confusing and I have to use an odd file to upload and keeping things separated is hard.
Thanks!
Eileen Brown says:
Let me touch on the uploading with cpanel, then I'll be back later about the Web Easy .alb thing.
In your cPanel; Files Section: click on "Legacy File Manager"
( IF you get the little window just click "GO" - I have mine turned off )
You should be in: /public_html/  <<< this is where you will make new directories to link each page back and forth to each other in Web Easy. You will need the full path of these directories and link them as "Internet Web Page."
SO, you are in /public_html/  <<< THIS is where you will upload the home page only.
THEN, you will upload each individual page into it's own directory, named as YOU choose. Just add new directories and be sure to note the links.
I am making a page to describe this process with images - hold on, it will be up shortly... working on it now with as much detail as possible...
And just so we stay on the same page, I added the link to "Web Easy Pro Organization Tips" to that page also.
These two things go hand in hand.  It is a whole new way of looking at and utilizing Web Easy Pro.  It just gives you more independent control over your own website content.
Since Web Easy Pro does the programming job for each .ALB in it's own directory on your hard drive, you have this option, but it IS very little known.
You have been such a great help and I do thank you from the bottom of my heart.  It has been so crazy the last several months and you have made some of my time much easier.  If your tutorial is as good as the advice you have given me, it will be very successful!
Eileen, I have a domain name I will be happy to give you if you think you can do something with it.  At least I think I still own it!  webbuildingeasy.com,  I have had it for about 4 years and unable to use it.  I have had a couple of offers to sell it but been a while.
You can have it free, if you want it, but you will have to cover the transfer.  I beleave I still have the .info, .net, and .org   You are welcome to them too.
Hi John.
I've been considering this but have well over 100 domains now.  I don't think these would be useful for me, unless you would like me to help you develop the .com.
Ideas these days don't run the line of teaching web design or website development other than the websites I have already developed or have in development with clients etc.
Thank you though, that is a very generous offer. You're very sweet to think of this.
The change was more than I wanted, all files got loaded.  Files for some 10 websites that I have been playing with somehow got loaded on my redneck prospector and the my keyboard died and now I am using on-screen keyboard.  Will fix all when I get new keyboard.
As for the prospecting, I have been a few times and found a few specks of gold.  In June I plan to do a lot more.  For now I am trying to build up a little endurance and stretch my little bit of money until check comes in.  Getting to Northern California was more expensive than I anticipated.  But all-in-all I am having a blast!
We are almost in the same boat John.  I count pennies here too, many months out of the year.  I start planning for the next Christmas in January!  No kiddin'.
Have you seen the wireless keyboards?  I have one in the office and LOVE it.  The keys feel like a real keyboard used to feel! No flatness that comes on all the laptops now.
Just go to Amazon and search for "wireless keyboard" and you'll find a bunch of keyboards for way under $30.  They use a little USB plug that goes on the computer that comes with the keyboard. Nothing could be easier or cheaper either.
I LOVE mine.
