Tip: Secure your passwords stored in Firefox

If you use Firefox to remember your passwords, you might be surprised, if not scared, to learn that all these passwords are easy to find in clear text for anyone who has physical access to your computer.

Where is this stored?

In its preferences, Firefox displays a list of all the stored user name and passwords. It is located under Security, Saved Passwords

You will get a list of all the websites for which you have saved your passwords. At the bottom of this new window, you can display every single password! If you don't mind, I will not post a screenshot here ;)

Scary isn't it?

How to improve this threat

Close this window and immediately set a Master Password. Simply check the "Use a master password" option and you will be prompted to enter your new password twice, with a nice strength meter underneath the fields.

It's important to know that you will now have to type this password to access the list of stored passwords but also the first time Firefox wants to read info from this list for every session.

Do you think I am paranoid?

Is this a way to have 2 passwords asked ? One you have to enter, one you just have to confirm... Better than nothing I guess

Great news this feature is very nice. After a long time we may forget his password because firefox does it for you. I use evereyday Firefox and it is a good web browser. I agree with Cedric.

This is one of the items on the (very short) list of poor features on Firefox - good advice.

Following another article on password security on this site I have started using LastPass which takes over from the existing password libraries you have. It even makes them available between browsers (I use Chrome, IE & Firefox) and can be accessed on multiple computers.

I automatically assumed that the password would be encrypted ... surely in the further updates they should revise this!!
