Google has just released its latest stable release of Chrome, version 4.0. This version adds a host of new features, most notably a large number of extensions much like what you will find for Firefox. Other improvements in this version include security and performance issues that were resolved from previous versions, support for HTML 5, bookmark sync between your computers and a slew of other minor changes.
While Chrome hasn’t upset Mozilla or Microsoft, it has surpassed Safari according to some studies. Given the fact that Chrome’s performance is reported by many benchmark tests to outdo both Explorer and Firefox, the addition of extensions and an increased range in functionality will only further Chrome’s market share.
The use of the extensions is more soundly implemented than in Firefox. Extensions can be installed with a simple click, do not require the user to restart their browser, and update to latest versions automatically, advances that should make the Chrome experience more streamlined than what is currently available from Firefox or Internet Explorer.
The update is thus far available for windows, however other platforms should be supported soon according to Google. Given that Mozilla just released a new version of its browser including themes, a feature that chrome pioneered, we can perhaps expect to see these two browsers butt heads some more in the coming months. As always the biggest benefactor of this sort of race is the consumer.
